Fall Classic Final Game Draws 51 Million Audience Members Across the US, Canada and Japan Markets.

The thrilling 11-inning matchup that saw the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays by one run attracted a combined 51M spectators across the US, Canada, and Japan territories. Major League Baseball reported this is the highest-rated Fall Classic finale after the 1991 showdown between the Minnesota Twins and Braves.

Television Viewership Breakdown

Last Saturday’s memorable contest secured 27.33M viewers on Fox Sports networks, Fox Deportes and Fox’s streaming platforms. According to Nielsen, it was the second most-watched program of the previous week.

It also is the top-rated World Series matchup after the 2017 edition Game 7 involving the Dodgers and Houston Astros, which drew 29.07 million. This represents a 16% improvement over the last finale between the Washington Nationals and Astros, which drew 23.19M.

In the weekly rankings, the sixth game placed fourth, the fourth game ranked 7th, Game 5 came in 8th, and Game 3 finished in 13th position.

International Audience Numbers

In Canada, the game averaged over 11 million watchers on the Sportsnet network and the French TVA Sports channel. This was the most-watched English-language program in the country after the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In the Japanese market, where the final game started at 9 p.m. local time, it drew 12M. This came after the previous Friday’s Game 6 – in which World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto gave up a single run in six innings – recorded over 13 million spectators, making it the most-watched Fall Classic game on a sole broadcaster in Japan.

Overall Averages and Patterns

The entire seven-game series drew over 15.7 million viewers on Fox, a two percent increase from last year’s Dodgers-Yankees matchup. This marks the first time since 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has seen audience increases for two consecutive years.

Including the Game 1 broadcast on the Univision network, the total American average reached over 16 million. The overall World Series viewership in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1 million in Canada.

The full MLB Postseason on Fox, FS1 and FS2 averaged 8.09 million viewers, an eight percent increase over last year and Fox’s best postseason ratings after 2017.

MLB reported that the World Series was televised in over 200 countries and territories by 44 broadcasting partners in sixteen various tongues.
